This stone does not resolve. Look at it from one angle and it is deep teal — the colour of open water at depth. Shift the view and a vivid blue asserts itself through the pavilion. Look again and there is a yellow-green at the crown, and something almost copper in the table under certain light. The oval brilliant facets rotate through all of it simultaneously.

1.25 carats from Queensland. 7.30 x 5.40 x 3.50mm — well-proportioned for an oval, the face-up size generous relative to the carat weight. The colour complexity is not zoning in the conventional sense. It is something the basalt gemfields of Australia produce that no other place on earth quite replicates.
