How Sapphires Actually Form
Natural sapphires form under genuinely specific geological conditions that are considerably less common than those required for diamond formation. They require aluminium-rich environments subjected to precise combinations of heat, pressure and trace element chemistry over geological time — the right elements, in the right concentrations, in a geological environment stable enough for large crystals to form without fracturing.
The sapphires that reach us have then survived millions of years of subsequent geological activity — uplift, erosion, transportation through river systems — before being deposited in mineable concentrations. The vast majority of sapphires formed in geological history were destroyed by the processes that followed. Those that survive to be mined represent a fraction of what was originally created.

The Synthetic Diamond Problem
The emergence of synthetic diamonds — chemically identical to natural diamonds, produced in increasing quantities at decreasing cost — has created a structural challenge for the commercial diamond market with no equivalent in the natural coloured gemstone world.
A synthetic sapphire and a natural sapphire are distinguishable by their geological history in ways that carry genuine market significance. Natural colour, natural inclusions, natural origin — these are qualities that cannot be replicated in a laboratory and that the market consistently rewards. The synthetic diamond market, by contrast, is creating real downward pressure on commercial natural diamond prices that is unlikely to reverse.

Fine coloured gemstones have shown consistent price appreciation over the past two decades, and most market analysts expect this to continue.
Commercial diamonds do not meet this criterion in the same way. Their rarity is managed rather than geological. Their market faces structural pressure from synthetics. And their pricing, while stable at the top end, has shown weakness in the commercial segment that is difficult to attribute to anything other than the supply dynamics described above.
