Why This Guide Exists

Most people walk into a bespoke jewellery consultation without knowing what to expect. They have a vague idea — something about choosing a stone, talking about design, waiting a few weeks — but the actual process is a mystery. And that uncertainty costs them. It costs them confidence in the room, clarity in their decisions, and sometimes it costs them the ring they actually wanted because they did not know the right questions to ask.

This guide is for them. It is a complete, honest account of what the bespoke engagement ring process looks like at Ruhuna Gemstones — from the first conversation to the moment the completed ring is in your hands. No mystery. No pressure. Just a clear picture of how it works, what it costs, and how to get exactly what you want.

What Bespoke Actually Means

The word bespoke is used loosely in the jewellery industry. Some jewellers call a ring bespoke if you chose the metal colour and the stone size from a fixed menu. That is not bespoke. That is customisation — a meaningful service, but a different one.

True bespoke jewellery means the piece does not exist before you commission it. There is no template being adapted. The design begins as a conversation, moves through sketches and models, and ends as a singular object made specifically for the person who will wear it. Every decision — the stone, the setting style, the metal, the profile of the band, the way the prongs sit — is made deliberately and uniquely for you.

At Ruhuna, bespoke means something specific: we begin with an exceptional stone, and we design around it. Not the other way around. A setting chosen before the stone is known is a setting designed in the abstract. We believe the stone should inform the design — its colour, its proportions, its character — and the jewellery should emerge from that understanding.

"We do not fit your stone into a design. We build the design around your stone. The difference in the finished piece is immediately visible."

Who Commissions a Bespoke Ring in Brisbane

The clients who come to Ruhuna for a bespoke commission are varied — but they share certain qualities. They are buyers for whom the ring matters beyond its function as a symbol. They want something that could not exist for anyone else. They are willing to invest the time the process requires because they understand that the result is proportional to that investment.

Some arrive knowing exactly what they want and needing a maker who can execute it with precision. Others arrive with nothing more than a feeling — a colour they love, a stone they saw once and cannot forget — and they need someone to translate that into a design. Both are valid starting points. Both produce extraordinary rings.

What they all share is this: they are not buying a ring off a shelf. They are commissioning an object. And that distinction changes everything about the experience.

The Ruhuna Bespoke Process — Step by Step

Here is exactly what happens from your first contact to the completed ring in your hands.

01
The Initial Consultation

Every commission begins with a conversation. This can happen in person in Brisbane, over video call, or via our private online consultation service. There is no obligation at this stage — it is genuinely just a conversation. We want to understand what you are looking for, who will wear the ring, your aesthetic instincts, and your budget. We will show you stones from our current collection that might be relevant, and talk through design directions that suit the person and the occasion. This conversation typically runs 45–60 minutes.

45–60 minutes · No obligation
02
Stone Selection

If the consultation gives us a clear direction, we move to stone selection. For clients who have seen a stone in our Signature Creations collection and want it set, this step is already done. For clients who want something specific — a particular colour, origin, carat range, or cut — we source beyond our listed inventory. We present the candidate stones with full information: dimensions, weight, origin, treatment status, and our assessment of their qualities. You select the stone that resonates. This is the foundation of everything that follows.

1–2 weeks if sourcing required
03
Design Development

Once the stone is confirmed, design begins. We work with our master artisans to develop sketches that respond to the stone's specific character — its colour zones, proportions, and personality. We present two or three distinct design directions with detailed sketches and discuss the reasoning behind each. You provide feedback, we refine. This is a collaborative process — your instincts and our expertise in dialogue. The design is confirmed when you see it and know it is right. Most clients reach that point in one or two rounds of refinement.

1–2 weeks
04
CAD Model and Approval

The confirmed design moves to computer-aided design (CAD), producing a precise three-dimensional model of the ring before a single gram of metal is committed. You review the CAD renders — often from multiple angles — and approve or request adjustments. Some clients also request a physical wax or resin model to hold and assess the proportions in three dimensions. This step protects against surprises and ensures complete confidence before the piece goes into production.

3–5 days
05
Handcrafting

With your approval confirmed, our master artisans begin handcrafting the ring in your chosen metal — typically 18 carat yellow, white, or rose gold, or platinum. The stone is set by hand, each claw or bezel element precisely formed and finished. The ring is polished, inspected, and quality-checked before it leaves the workshop. This is the stage that takes the most time — and the stage that determines everything about the quality of the finished piece.

2–3 weeks
06
Delivery

The completed ring is delivered to you in Brisbane or shipped worldwide with full insurance and tracking. We photograph each completed piece before it leaves and provide you with a full documentation package including stone provenance, treatment status, and care instructions. If you are collecting in person in Brisbane, we invite you to receive the ring privately at a time that suits you.

How Long Does a Bespoke Ring Take?

The full process — from initial consultation to completed ring in hand — typically takes four to six weeks. This assumes the stone selection is straightforward and design development moves efficiently. Commissions that require extended sourcing for a specific stone, or that involve particularly complex designs, may take longer — we will always give you an accurate timeline before you commit.

Typical Commission Timeline
Week 1
Initial consultation and stone selection
Week 2
Design sketches presented and refined
Week 3
CAD model produced and approved
Weeks 4–5
Ring handcrafted by master artisans
Week 6
Quality inspection, photography, and delivery

If you have a specific date in mind — an anniversary, a milestone birthday, a trip planned months in advance — tell us at the initial consultation. We work to your timeline where we can, and we will be honest with you immediately if the timeline is not achievable.

What Does a Bespoke Engagement Ring Cost?

This is the question most people hesitate to ask. They should not — budget is a legitimate and important part of the conversation, and there is no correct answer.

A bespoke engagement ring from Ruhuna involves two primary costs: the stone and the setting. These are separate and both variable.

The stone is the largest variable. A beautiful unheated Australian parti sapphire might sit between $2,000 and $6,000 AUD depending on carat weight, colour quality, and zoning definition. A fine unheated Ceylon blue sapphire at 2 carats or above moves into a different price range. We work across the full spectrum and can find exceptional stones at every point in the range.

The setting — the metalwork, labour, and any accent diamonds — typically starts from $2,500 AUD for a well-crafted solitaire in 18 carat gold, and moves upward depending on complexity, metal weight, and the inclusion of side stones or elaborate detailing.

Most Ruhuna bespoke commissions land between $5,000 and $15,000 AUD all-inclusive. Exceptional commissions sit above this. Clients with tighter budgets are not turned away — we work with what is available and find the best possible stone and setting within those parameters. The conversation is always honest.

How to Prepare for Your First Consultation

What to Think About Beforehand

Your Consultation Preparation Guide
  • Budget range — you do not need an exact number, but a range helps us immediately identify the right stones and setting options to show you
  • Stone preferences — do you have a colour in mind? A specific origin or variety? Or are you open to being surprised by what we show you?
  • Style references — screenshots, saved images, rings you have admired are all useful. You do not need to be able to describe what you want in technical terms — images communicate far more efficiently
  • Metal preference — yellow gold, white gold, rose gold, or platinum? If you do not know, we can discuss what suits the stone and the wearer
  • Ring size — if you know it, bring it. If not, we can size at the consultation or advise on how to find out discreetly if this is a surprise
  • Timeline — is there a specific date you are working toward? Tell us at the start so we can plan accordingly
  • Questions — write down anything you want to understand about the process, the stones, or the setting options. No question is too basic

Why Brisbane Buyers Choose Ruhuna

Brisbane has no shortage of jewellers. The question is not whether you can find someone to make a ring — it is whether you can find someone who will make the right one.

What distinguishes Ruhuna is the starting point: the stones. We source Australian parti sapphires, Ceylon blues, and teal sapphires directly, with a specificity and care that most jewellers do not apply. When you commission a ring from us, the stone at its centre is not a wholesale catalogue purchase — it is a stone we have held, assessed under multiple light conditions, and selected with genuine consideration of its qualities.

The second distinction is the design process. We do not have a house style that every commission passes through. Each ring is designed from the stone outward, which means no two Ruhuna commissions look alike unless the client specifically wants something that references an existing design.

The third is the relationship. A bespoke commission involves a level of trust and communication that extends well beyond a single transaction. We take that seriously — and our clients, many of whom return for subsequent pieces, reflect that back to us.

"The ring you commission today should still feel exactly right in forty years. That requires getting the stone, the design, and the craft all correct — not just one of the three."

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About Bespoke Rings

Questions We Get Asked Every Week
  • Can I commission a ring as a surprise without the recipient's ring size? — Yes. We design and make the ring, and size it correctly once the proposal has happened. Resizing is straightforward and included in your commission.
  • What if I change my mind about the design after the CAD is approved? — Minor changes are accommodated where possible. Significant design changes after the metalwork has begun may incur additional costs — we discuss this clearly before production starts.
  • Do I need to be in Brisbane for the consultation? — No. We conduct consultations via video call for interstate and international clients. We can ship stones for viewing in some circumstances, and we deliver completed rings worldwide.
  • Can I bring my own stone to be set? — Yes, with some conditions. We need to assess the stone before confirming we can work with it. Not all stones are suited to all settings, and we will advise honestly.
  • Is there a deposit required? — Yes. We require a deposit to commence design work, with the balance due on delivery. The structure is discussed and agreed at the consultation.
  • What metals do you work in? — 18 carat yellow, white, and rose gold as standard. Platinum for clients who prefer it. We do not work in 9 carat gold — the quality difference in wear is significant enough that we consider it a disservice to the stone.

The First Step Is a Conversation

Everything described in this guide begins with a single conversation. There is no commitment at that stage — no deposit, no obligation, no pressure. It is genuinely just a conversation about what you want and whether we are the right people to make it.

Most clients find that the consultation itself is valuable independent of whether they commission a ring. Understanding what is possible, what different stones actually look like in person, and what the bespoke process genuinely involves — these are things worth knowing before any decision is made.

If you are thinking about a bespoke engagement ring in Brisbane, start the conversation. The ring will follow.

The Ruhuna Commitment

Every commission we accept is one we intend to be proud of. We do not take on work we cannot do exceptionally well, and we do not rush a process that deserves care. If we are not the right fit for what you need, we will tell you — and point you toward someone who is.
