A Personal Connection

We are Australian-born Sri Lankans. Ceylon sapphires were not discovered to us through a trade catalogue or a gemology textbook — they came through family, through geography, through the particular way people from that part of the world talk about stones.

In that culture, provenance is not a marketing claim. It is the fundamental characteristic of the object. Origin matters. Treatment matters. The difference between a heated stone and an unheated one is not a commercial distinction — it is the difference between a stone that was found and a stone that was altered. Families who work with sapphires for generations understand this instinctively.

We brought that understanding to Brisbane.

The Kingdom of Ruhuna

Our name, Ruhuna (රුහුණ, ruhuṇə), belongs to one of Sri Lanka's most ancient kingdoms — a powerful centre of trade, craft and resilience in the island's southern region, famed for its natural abundance and deep cultural traditions.

It is from this historic land — shaped by kings and temples, and by two thousand years of sapphire mining — that we draw not only our name, but our way of working: integrity in sourcing, care in craft, and a respect for what the earth produces that does not diminish over time.

We chose this name because it is not borrowed. It belongs to us by heritage.

Nothing Hidden

Around 90% of sapphires on the market have been heat-treated. Most are sold without that information disclosed — not because it is illegal, but because the industry developed before mandatory standards existed. The habit of silence became convention.

At Ruhuna, the convention is the opposite. Every stone carries its treatment status before anything else. Heated or unheated — you know what you are looking at before any conversation about setting or price begins. Every stone is accompanied by independent certification confirming its natural origin and treatment status.

That is not a policy we adopted. It is the only way we know how to work.

Where We Source

Ceylon, Sri Lanka — the ancient benchmark. Cornflower blues, royal blues, and pinks that have defined fine sapphire standards for five centuries. The Ratnapura district has produced these stones since before recorded history, and the finest examples remain among the most sought-after gemstones in the world.

Queensland, Australia — the Anakie Gemfields produce parti sapphires found nowhere else on earth. A single crystal carrying yellow and teal, zoned by geology alone, formed over hundreds of millions of years. Always unheated. Always from the ground beneath our own country.

Madagascar — teal and blue stones of exceptional clarity, often with a colour shift that moves from ocean green in daylight to deep blue by lamplight.

Every stone is selected in person. Every treatment is disclosed. Every stone is one of one.

Made in Brisbane

Every piece is handcrafted in Brisbane by artisans who share our standards. We use 100% certified Australian 18ct gold — sourced and refined domestically. The setting is fabricated to hold your specific stone to its exact dimensions — not a standard template with adjustments, but a setting built for this stone and no other.

The prongs are set by hand. The ring is inspected, photographed and documented before it leaves us. This is the part that cannot be rushed, and the part we never will.

There is no retail space because a retail space would require us to maintain something other than the stones and the craft. We work by private consultation only — in person in Brisbane, or via Zoom for clients anywhere in the world. Every resource we have goes into the pieces.
